Wellness Wednesday: Chocolate Protein Smoothie

Two of my latest wellness goals have been to eat more omega-3 fatty acids and plant-based proteins, especially first thing in the morning. Flax, chia, and hemp seeds make it super easy to get plenty of plant-based omega-3s first thing, but getting at least 20 grams of protein before 10 a.m. has been the hardest part. But that’s what I love most about protein powder: Plant-based protein powders such as Sunwarrior Warrior Blend contain 17 grams of protein per scoop (or 25 grams if you use a scoop and a half).
That said, I’ve been using plant-based protein powders about two to three times a week — primarily on the days I make smoothies for breakfast. Chocolate protein powders are my favorite, but vanilla or unsweetened powders are much more versatile.
If you’re looking for a quick, delicious, and protein-rich breakfast, this Chocolate Protein Smoothie is for you. It contains about 29 grams of protein from the protein powder, flax seeds, and almond milk, 900 mg of potassium from the bananas and flax seeds, 1,628 mg omega-3s, and 468 mg of omega-6s. It’s also super easy to make and even easier to devour.
What You Need (Makes Two Smoothies)
- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 tbs flax meal or freshly ground flax seeds
- 1 ½ scoops chocolate protein powder (Sunwarrior is my favorite)
How to Make This Chocolate Protein Smoothie:
- Add each item to your blender, adding the flax seeds in last.
- Blend on high for about a minute.
- Pour into glasses and enjoy!
